The Federation of Asian Biotech Associations (FABA) proudly announces that Reema Rawat from the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES) has been honored with the prestigious Natco Pharma-sponsored Dr. Yellapragada Subba Rao FABA Young Innovator Award. This accolade celebrates her pioneering work in developing a portable cervical cancer screening device, marking a substantial leap forward in cancer diagnostics.
Rawat’s innovation addresses a critical need in the field of early cancer detection. Her device, which utilizes an electrochemical biosensor, is designed to be cost-effective, user-friendly, and highly accessible, especially in underserved regions. The device focuses on detecting HPV-16, a key biomarker associated with cervical cancer. Through clinical trials, the device has demonstrated a strong correlation with existing data, underscoring its reliability and potential to reduce cervical cancer mortality rates by enabling early, non-invasive testing.
The award was presented to Rawat by Dr. Jitendra Kumar, Managing Director of the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), in a ceremony attended by Dr. Pavan Bhat from Natco Pharma and other distinguished guests. This recognition not only honors Rawat’s innovative contributions but also highlights the impact of her work on global health.
In addition to Rawat’s accolade, Sandeep Sehrawat from the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), S.A.S. Nagar, and Pragya Gupta from the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research – Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (CSIR-IGIB), New Delhi, were jointly awarded the Yellapragada Subba Rao GEM Award for Doctoral Students, sponsored by Govin Holdings.
Sehrawat received the award for his groundbreaking project, “BiSpekDAb™: An Engineered Antibody for Severe Asthma.” This innovative treatment targets and neutralizes cytokines involved in asthma inflammation, offering a promising new approach to managing severe asthma more effectively and safely.
Gupta’s research focuses on β-thalassemia and sickle cell disease, employing CRISPR/Cas9 technology to reactivate fetal hemoglobin and alleviate symptoms of these genetic disorders. Her work has led to the development of novel cell models that hold promise for reversing disease phenotypes, potentially leading to new, effective treatments for these blood disorders.
The award ceremony was graced by Dr. Jitendra Kumar, with Dr. Anand Govindaluri from Govin Holdings in attendance. Both expressed their admiration for the recipients’ groundbreaking research and the significant potential these innovations hold for advancing healthcare globally.
FABA extends its deepest gratitude to the sponsors for their vital support in nurturing emerging scientific talent. The selection committee, composed of esteemed experts including Dr. Ajith Kamath, Prof. Reddanna Pallu, Dr. Uday Saxena, Dr. Ranjan Chakrabarti, Dr. Suresh Poosala, Dr. Surya Sankuratri, Dr. Sharmishta Banerjee, and Dr. Venkateswarlu Akella, ensured the awards maintained their high standards through their extensive experience and dedication.
FABA remains committed to fostering a supportive environment for bioscience innovation. The achievements of this year’s awardees reflect not only their personal dedication but also the vibrant potential within the life sciences community to drive meaningful change and advancement in the field.
